Dear Solana Beach School District Families,
At their regularly scheduled meeting on September 12, the Board of Education unanimously approved district staff recommendations to reconfigure grade levels in the District’s Carmel Valley schools. These recommendations were based on assessed district needs as well as data gained through numerous parent and staff meetings earlier this year. Thank you to everyone who participated in these informative meetings.
Beginning with the 2014-15 school year, the grade-level configuration for Solana Beach School District’s Carmel Valley schools will be:
Carmel Creek School – TK-3rd Grade
Solana Highlands School – TK-3rd Grade
Solana Pacific School – 4th-6th Grade
Solana Ranch School – K-6th Grade
Suggestions made during the parent and staff meetings regarding pedestrian safety prompted district staff to work closely with City traffic engineers to address concerns around Solana Pacific School. As a result of this collaboration, the City has painted the crosswalks at Carmel Country and Townsgate roads yellow and will install pedestrian countdown timers. Three-minute only parking signs have been installed and are being enforced by local law enforcement in front of Solana Pacific School. The District has also hired before- and after-school staff to monitor the crossing areas at Townsgate and Carmel Country roads. This staff will supervise the crosswalks and reinforce their correct usage. Staff members will not walk students across the street as we have been advised that this deters students from learning how to use crossing signals appropriately. To keep our parking lot safe, please adhere to safe driving practice, pull forward, and do not use cell phones. District administration will continue to diligently monitor these areas for safety concerns.
In addition, district staff will work with Carmel Valley schools, teachers, and administrators to ensure next year’s transition goes smoothly. A series of parent informational meetings will be held later this school year with an opportunity for parents to tour their new schools. More information on this exciting development will follow in the coming months. If you would like to share suggestions for a successful transition, please do not hesitate to contact me.
